Throw away your ice-packs!
Throw your ice packs away! This hyperice knee wrap is amazing. If you are familiar with Normatec products (we have the full leg and hips) you know that they are fantastic for pre or post workouts and noticeably reduce swelling and that heavy, lactic-acid leg feeling. We take ours on all of our ski and mountain biking trips. But this knee wrap is another level up. The added heat and cold contrast therapy is awesome. I was expecting the heat to work well, but the cooling was way more functional than I expected… certainly removes the need for ice packs after workouts. In addition, the lower volume compression works really efficiently and the new hose-less pump is so much easier to use and allows you move around and get on with your day while still in recovery. As an in-denial, middle-aged, former varsity athlete with a repaired ACL and product is a must have… maybe I can pretend I’m still 30 years old for another decade.

Big improvements in X2 device!
Overall I’m very happy with the X2 knee device! I own the first generation as well, which I’m also a fan of, but the addition of compression makes the X2 device even more effective!Compared to the gen 1, the X2 device allows you to use a better Velcro mechanism to secure the device to your leg, ensuring that the thermal pad makes good, consistent contact with your knee to improve the heat transfer and cooling effect of the device. With the gen 1 device, I needed to use the provided Velcro strips to help synch the lower strap around my smaller calves to ensure a good contact with the thermal pad. The X2 device supports a wider range of body sizes without the need for additional straps. What’s also a boon is the ability to use the device without having to connect through your phone. Of course you can still use the phone and dial in the settings you want to use with their great UI for device control, but it’s nice to be able to use it when you don’t have your phone handy. You simply select the functions on the device LCD screen and then press start to get started in the first cycle. You can add more time very easily and intuitively. You will need to consult the “quick start” manual to learn what buttons allow you to program what, but I think that’s a pretty quick study.I also find that the compression is on par with other Normatec devices and that the use of compression along with contrast results in less swelling in my knees and faster recovery after big leg workouts. I think it is importance to keep the leg in a good, horizontal position so that the device is fully in contact with the knee, so you have to set yourself up for success and make sure you’re using the device correctly if you’re not feeling enough cooling sensation, but the compression helps to drive the thermal pad closer to the skin and muscle, improving the heat transfer and cooling.Overall this is a huge improvement on the gen 1 device, which I already loved!

Pretty bad for $450
Was excited about getting this, thought it would help with an injury and long time knee problems. The price is steep but I figured that means that it’s high quality. I’ve used it for one day so far and I’ve had issues with the app where it just loses connection or it can’t locate the device. The device itself has given me an error code 3 times. The battery is pretty bad, you have to charge it after you use it. It doesn’t get that cold. Terrible quality for a product that costs $450. Will be returning.Edit:Tried it again on day 2, still getting this error and the it takes a while to charge the battery.

So much better than manual options
I love this thing! I had a total knee replacement surgery about 9 months ago, and ever since I’ve had to ice daily to keep my recovery in check between regular trail runs and cycling. In the past I used an ice therapy machine (a huge improvement over ice packs or similar, which get colder than is medically helpful), but it was still a big hassle; I went through a ton of ice, I was tethered to wall power, and l struggled with long car rides. Worst of all, there was no way to do contrast therapy with my previous setup. With the X 2, though, I can go between heat and cooling really fast—much quicker than I was expecting or is possible with any manual products. At first I used heat plus compression before runs, and then cooling after exercise. That regimen reduced soreness in my knee for a more comfortable start, and the recovery seemed effective at reducing the swelling in my knee like I’d expected. Once I tried contrast, though, I never went back. Besides feeling really nice without any mess or inconvenience, I’m convinced this is doing a superior job. The compression was also an unexpected bonus, but I find that it really creates good contact for the heat/cold in a way that simply wrapping something tighter doesn’t.Personally I always use the app since it’s fast and does a nice job of integrating with Apple Health and Strava, but when my wife borrowed the X 2 she appreciated that it was easy to purely operate with the tactile buttons.

Great for contrast therapy, ineffective for compression
Agree with other reviewers. I have an AC separation in my shoulder and I’m using the contrast therapy on this device to help my recovery. It does a great job alternating between hot/cold. But I would say that the compression is ineffective. I was expecting the level of compression provided by my Hyperice Normatec Elite leg compression bags, but it is basically ineffective for the shoulder in my opinion. The bags expand for compression, but the outside fabric of the shoulder mount is loose, so it expands outwards rather than actually providing compression in my contrast therapy. Disappointed by the compression, but thrilled about the hot/cold contrasting.
