A hands-on guide to holistic canine herbalism
“Even if skeptical readers don’t come away completely convinced, they’ll be enormously educated—Hogan imparts a huge amount of biological information about dogs, and does it all with an easy readability that will make quite a bit of it stick. An informative and sometimes eye-opening examination of natural remedies for helping your dog.”—Kirkus Reviews
• Teaches the tenets of holistic herbalism for the individual dog
• Presents safe, clinically proven, and effective protocols for common canine conditions, from acid reflux to allergies to itching, scratching, and yeast
• Lays out a comprehensive materia medica of canine-specific herbs, including what conditions they are good for, their energetics, internal and external use, safe dosages, and contraindications
In this comprehensive guide to holistic care for dogs, clinical canine herbalist Rita Hogan explains that by looking at dogs as individual ecosystems with unique personalities, physiology, and needs, we can select effective and personalized herbal remedies to support their constitutions and provide relief from many different ailments.
Hogan, who has spent more than two decades working with canines, uses energetic principles (cool, warm, dry, damp) to reveal how herbs are not “one size fits all” and how to find the root cause of chronic imbalances. She discusses in depth how a dog’s main organ systems work, how they are connected to each other, and why we need to understand them when choosing specific herbs and foods.
Presenting safe, clinically proven, and effective protocols for common canine conditions—from acid reflux to allergies to itching, scratching, and yeast—Hogan presents a wide variety of holistic and herbal remedies: from herbal tinctures, glycerities, and phytoembryonics to flower essences, essential oils, medicinal mushrooms, and homeopathy. Her comprehensive materia medica of canine-specific herbs that she uses in her practice details what herbs are good for which conditions and why, what types of energetics are involved, safe dosage recommendations for each herbal remedy, and when to discontinue an herb.
Allowing each of us to take a hands-on approach to our canine companions’ health and longevity, this herbal guide outlines how to help them live their best lives by our sides.

    Don’t wait, just buy!
The amount of information in this book is incredible! Never will I have to worry if the info I find online is accurate! Beyond being super informative, it helps you build a foundation in herbalism that you can use in your own life. And although it’s called “The Herbal Dog” there is a portion for every herb that says whether or not it is cat safe. I had been going back and forth on whether or not to buy this book for a couple months and regret not purchasing sooner!

Saved tons of money on visits to veterinarians.
Best book I ever bought. Worth every penny I paid for it. I estimate that the information in her book saved around $1000 in vet bills just this year alone, even considering the outrageous prices of food. She emphasized the importance of connecting with the plants, and that advice alone made it much simpler to figure out which herbs I need and which herbs I don’t. While her audience is dog owners, her information (you are responsible for the dosage; the listed dosages ONLY apply to dogs) is relevant to humans. While I titled this about saving money on vet visits, she is very responsible and tells you when to see a vet.

THIS IS THE Must have go to on Canine Herbalism , TRULY the EXPERT
Amazing book! It’s not a book you read front cover to back. It teaches you about your dog things you never knew. It is a guide to help your dog holistically inside and out, nose to tail, ear tip to toe tip. I’ve learned so much about my 5 pups from this book and how unique each one is and so much more to learn. I have tabbed this book up, annotated it, and continue to reference it. Rita Hogan is THE EXPERT in Canine Herbalism I will always go to. Her website too has THE best purest tinticures she references in her book that have helped my pups. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and passion to help me detox and keep my pups healthy. I also met Rita in Orlando at Dr. Judy’s Naturally Healthy Pet Experience and she is an amazing nice person.

The Herbal Dog. The Best book every for Dog parents!
I highly recommend The Herbal Dog by Rita Hogan, C.H. If you are a pet parent that truly wants to keep your dog healthy through diet and body energetics this is the book for you! I have read many books on health and diet for dogs but Rita’s approach to using herbs and supplements through the energetics of the food and your pups individual body energetics is amazing. I have not found anyone else that is presenting this information on the bodies energetics for dogs and humans. There are many great veterinarians and health books with wonderful information on food, herbs and supplements but none of them approach the subject of the energetics of the body, food and supplements like Rita does. Dogs are individuals and can’t be stereotyped in a one diet and supplement fits all dogs. I have been following holistic veterinarians’ and nutrition for over 10 years. I have been working with Rita’s information for two years now and it has been a blessing for both of my dogs and myself. The Herbal Dog has so much information in it that I can’t even begin to cover it all in a review. From my view The Herbal Dog is one book that every dog parent should have!

This is a MUST read for everyone who loves their dogs and want the best for them! Its very informative and its very wise to listen to her every word.We lost a precious dog back in 2022 because of what I call the ‘chemical world of veterinary care’. Two weeks later, another one of our precious boys was in liver failure. Had I listened to the vet, he would not be with us today. He will be 12yrs old come May. The vet wanted me to continue the chemical way of treating him. I said with all due respect, I’m leaving this office and finding another route. And if I can’t, I will be back. That was almost three years ago..and guess what I’ve never been back!I left that office knowing I had to do better and better I did. I researched and researched and found my natural way of living and cooking for our boys. From that day forward, I never looked back. I knew I saved our precious boy and continue to this day! Our two precious boys are healthy and living healtheir without the chemicals! There are other ways..don’t be afraid to live outside the chemical driven world!I hope everybody reading this review takes it to heart. I am living proof we can all do better for our precious babies! DON’T BE AFRAID!Thank you for this very informative book.
